Field-Test Course Overview

STEP Courses are split into two major components: the Summer Institute and the Follow-Up Course. Summer Institute teachers are invited to apply to participate in the STEP Follow-Up Course to earn up to 3 more credits. See details on the Follow-Up Course below:


Teachers who have completed STEP Summer Institute are eligible to take part in STEP Follow-Up Course activities. Follow-Up Course registration is limited to 30 participants, so early registration is suggested since this opportunity is based on a “first come first served” basis and in the past has filled up fast.

Teachers who chose to complete three of the Follow-Up Course credits will:

  • Earn 500-level UAF Education credits;
  • Have scientists visit their classrooms to share their love of science with students.


Participants may earn a total of three credits by taking part in the following STEP Follow-Up Course Activity:

Audio Conferences and Teacher Practicum: 3 credits

Education instructors will lead six 2.5-hour audio conferences throughout the school year (September, October, November, December, January and February). During the audio conferences, teachers will share and revise GLE-aligned lessons, discuss science content DVDs, share about how field-tested lessons worked in their classrooms, and best practice teaching methods. As their practicum, teachers field-test lessons in the classroom that were written during previous STEP Summer Institutes.

Visits from Science Instructors

Each Summer Institute scientist will provide mentorship electronically. Scientists also will be available to visit classrooms to share their love of science with students. To request a visit, contact Approval of scientist instructor visit requests is based on the scientist’s availability during the requested time, willingness to travel to your site, and various unforeseeable weather factors.

Dropping the Course:
Teachers who are registered for the STEP Follow-Up Activities course, but need to drop the course, must fill out a UAF Add/Drop Form and submit to the UAF Office of the Registrar.
